Your pupils dilate when you see the person you are attracted to. Because the nervous system controls the muscles of the irises, the response of the nervous system to different stimuli results in involuntary pupil dilation. Another commonly cited reason the pupils dilate is in response to excitement or sexual arousal. When a person sees something or someone they find very attractive, their eyes may dilate.

When it is touched, its leaves fold up making the plant appear to be shy, hence its name!

But true friends, true companions, are the kind of people you want to be with (and be honest with) in any frame of mind. You don’t need the alcohol to make the conversations less boring, or the introductions more smooth. There is the joy that stems from the activity you’re engaging in, and the fact that you’re doing it all together. It’s not quite a buzz, but it is a certain kind of high. I won’t be so afterschool special as to refer to it as being “high on life,” but that’s not far from the sentiment I’m trying to convey. The point is, not everything we do should have to be seen through a pair of beer goggles.

I wish more weekends were full of daytime, well-lit and completely coherent outings amongst friends. No one has to be the teetotaler who poo-poos everyone when someone cracks a beer, but there is a decent balance that could be struck between the two. At the end of the day, there are a million and one things we can all find to do together, and it could be argued that the most boring of which would include “sitting in a room and drinking for the purpose of getting drunk.”

through the months of Twitter and Instagram, I have seemed to forgotten that I intended to keep a personal source of my life for no one but me, this. I have gotten lost in the whirlwind of posting bits of my life and having others “like” my postings. Months of posting tweets and photos daily, yet I feel like I haven’t written anything down in a while. Nothing of value at least.

Living on your own is a scary, yet inviting thing. It allows you to be sucked into whatever you emerge yourself in. Lately it’s been anatomy, lab work and physics. But more importantly, living with my friends, cooking with my friends, studying with my friends, and going out with my friends. Every excuse to get drunk, is a reason to. Yet somehow my grades are better than ever and I’m incredibly productive when I need to be.

Professionally speaking, submitting a grant to NCUR is my biggest accomplishment thus far. Heading a project at work, and having people under me is also a change of scenery.

Words are flowing, yet I feel like I should channel this into my frail and malnourished journal.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is known nationally for their capacity to foster infant Chimpanzees, and now there is a new member to their troop. Seven-month-old Ruben arrived on July 30, after being hand-raised at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Ruben’s mother, Rukiya, died just 24 hours after giving birth during a medical proceedure. It was a rough start for baby Ruben both to lose his mom. After being treated roughly by his biological dad and not be accepted by that zoo’s surrogate mom, it was apparent: Ruben needed a new home.

Those who had given him round-the-clock care at Lowry Park Zoo accompanied Ruben when it came time to move, and stayed to monitor his progress during the first 72 hours of transition. And the effort has been a success! Just weeks later, Ruben is blending well and being accepted by his new chimp family. Starting with Kito, his surrogate mom, the baby has gradually been introduced to Mwami, the dominant male, and three others in the group.

After surviving another Wednesday of Physics, Anatomy Lab, and Physics Lab here I finally sit, on my couch. Totally content with doing nothing for the rest of this evening. It blows my mind that 7 weeks has already passed. Living in a new house on our own. It’s hard to imagine where I was a year ago; my friend group has slowly changed, my outlook on life has as well. I feel new. Yet I can’t remember the change in myself. It has happened so fast, I feel like I’ve woken up a fresh, new person with ideals I never thought I myself would possess.

Change is a good thing.

And I’m beginning to accept that.
